French Country Homes
When people talk about the country look for homes, they are usually drawing on several different cultures, including American, Swedish, English, and French. Each one has distinctive elements that set them apart from the other, and that attract people to them. You can mix and match the different elements to create something new and unique to you, or you can select one and throw yourself whole-heartedly into replicating that particular design. French country homes are very distinctive, and they have many beautiful elements. You can select one, some, or all for your own home. The common elements of French country homes include the use of specific colors, the use of certain materials, architectural features, common motifs, windows and flooring treatment, and accents that tie all of the different design elements together.
The first thing you want to do when replicating French country homes is consider your color palette. Fortunately, the colors come from all over the color wheel, and the design is actually quite comfortable with taking from the extreme shades. You could have a burnt rust, a sunny yellow, a soft lavender, and a cobalt blue. The important thing is that they’re typically colors that you can find in nature. Jeweled and neon tones would be out of place in a traditional setting.
The use of the proper materials is also critical. This style requires all natural materials, and that goes for the furniture, the ceiling, the walls, and the floor. A stone fireplace is also wholly appropriate, as are heavy beams across the ceiling. The flooring should be stone, clay, brick, or even old wood. You want something that looks old, lived on, and yet, rustic and charming.
